Amish lifestyle

Chris and I watched a movie called” Witness” played by one of my favorite foreign actors Harrison Ford. Witness is a great movie and I liked it. John Book is a cop who was played by Harrison Ford. In the movie, there was an Amish boy who witnessed a crime. By the way, I’m not going to talk about the movie here.

One thing that caught my attention was about the Amish people. I was shocked to know that there were people that live like the Amish, I didn’t know about Amish, Chris asked me if I know about Amish people, I told him, I didn’t even know what Amish is. I have no idea about Amish people. But I know now after Chris explained some of it to me and the movie shows some of the Amish lifestyle and that helps me understand. I couldn’t wait until morning, I wanted to go online to get more information about the Amish but it will be very late for me to get online and also I know it can wait till the morning.

The next morning, I did research online about the Amish. It’s amazing and I find it very interesting, their history, beliefs, practices, how they live, their lifestyle, I think it’s wonderful. It’s shocking to know that they didn’t use electricity at all. Out of my amazement I asked Chris the same question 3 times, “really, they’re not using electricity at all, and no oven, microwave, washing machine, and no computer stuff like that. And I got the same answer from him, “yes!” Can you imagine that? For sure they don’t have those newest inventions nowadays like IPod, gadgets and everything. Amish people are plain people. They are best known for simple living. Their women wear plain dress, no jewelries. They are early riser and go to bed early. It’s amazing to know about their lifestyle. The kind of contentment they have is so inspiring. They are very contented and they refuse earthly things. I like their lifestyle but I don’t think I want to be like them. No computer…? I enjoy where I am and what I have right now, living in the place surrounded with new technologies, I believe everything is from above even those that have the wisdom to create things like microwave, new medicine and high technology. In the bible, it says that Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above.

Anyway, I admire their perseverance and I respect for what they believe. But there’s an article I’ve read about Amish that they do not believe in any musical instruments. They are just contented to sing acapella. But in the bible, musical instruments is mentioned several times. People in the old testament use drums, harp etc. This made me confused a bit because the Amish are known for living in the bible but it doesn’t make sense. They refuse to use musical instruments. For them playing instrument is worldly. Anyway, I am not against how they live despite of it I salute them and I believe what they do is an inspiration.

This is one reason if given a chance to go other places, I’ll choose Pennsylvania, and I want to meet some Amish people and of course I would like to experience their buggy ride. I’m glad I did some readings about Amish; it is great to be reminded that it is possible people can live with no electricity, gadgets-modern lifestyles and it is not the end of the world if you don’t own any of those gadgets. So, we have our choice on how to enjoy life, what we need is to learn to be thankful in everything.

Host: Noreen/Darin-August Potluck

We were off  for potluck yesterday. Casey call it "Hello Party", she didn't want goodbye party. She just didn't want to go home. I'm glad we're back attending the potluck. It's been awhile since we have joined the potluck gathering. I think the last time was at Aileen's place on New Year's Eve.

And now that I'm not working we can join them more often. We don't want to miss the good stuff. (LOL) It's nice to have monthly gathering and meet new friends!

Thank you Noreen and Hunter for hosting this month's potluck. Noreen, you are very accommodating person. No wonder you are Filipino, we are known for that, if you know what I mean. We had a wonderful time at your place.

To Niah and Peter, nice to see you guys yesterday knowing you'll be leaving soon. Maricel, we are so happy to see you again. Anyway, we got home around 7:45pm. I was so tired last night to upload photos and I didn't want to be on the computer. I know some of you are waiting for it. Photos available to view at photos page or simply click August potluck.

Library Stuff Goodies
Posted on August 27, 2008

We were off to library yesterday. I wanted to go look there if they have the HTML book that I can borrow and book for Chris that he needed for his online class. Unfortunately, they don't have the book Chris was looking for and the book I was looking for but they've got a few selection of books that made me interest to borrow, which I did. I grabbed two books off the bookshelves called Website Design Goodies and Blogging for dummies, these will keep me busy reading for a week. And of course we got a few children books for Casey and few DVD's!

Casey had fun time yesterday at the library. They have computer for educational learning intended only for children to play with. Each kid is allowed to play the computer for about 30 minutes only and it automatically log you off. Unless there's no kids waiting in line for it. This will let the other kids get a chance to play the computer. They have also coloring paper for kids to color. Crayons was set on the table for those kids would like to color. What a great place to visit with family. And they have every Wednesdays story time for kids. They have  a lot of good stuff  for you to get that won't cost you anything just make sure you return the stuff they lend from you before the due date.

One thing, I can see a problem is, Casey was making too much noise She got excited with all the books and toys they have. It's difficult for her not to make noise. I have to teach her to learn to be quiet at times especially on a certain places like the Library. I'd notice when I was near on the magazines aisle they have magazines that you can buy for $.25 each. It is very cheap, for sure you can save a few bucks by visiting your local library. They have computer for you to use and also on this hot weather, one of the best place to cool off is library and this also prevent you for using your AC when you were at your house. Just a thought! LOL Picture above are the stuff we borrowed yesterday!

Pages
Posted on August 27, 2008

We’re so glad to have our internet connection back. We lost it last night. It just came back on this afternoon.

Anyway, As much as I would like to put a page on each entry, it seems like I can't do it anymore. I would end up like having a hundreds of pages on my site which is not good for my bandwidth. Although, we haven't exceeded our bandwidth since. I know this will cause problems for some people to view the pages but I'm just ignoring it and hoping this won't affect the site. I just didn't want to deal with it. But too often it came to mind that this will not be really a good idea/design unless I'm going to change a new server but really didn't want to do it. Every so often I was tempted to change to the one is ready made out there like BlogSpot or word press. But I am not sure if I could use FTP using their server.

I love playing and trying a new layout for my website using the FrontPage and applying of my little creation using Photoshop CS to my site. I am learning out of this. Actually, I haven't experience any problems with our 1&1 server since I got this. We are happy and satisfied with 1&1 so I just stick to it. And besides I am learning a few things about building a website.

About the pages, I’m working on it. Hopefully I get it done soon.
This is for now. Time for me to watch my "Tagalog" soap opera online I didn’t get a chance to watch it this morning due to we lost the internet connection.

Splash one more time!

We just got home from swimming. We finally tried the Blairmore pool. This is our first time to be in the pool. Chris lives here for 9 years and he never tried the Blairmore pool Well, he have no choice now, Casey and I wants to be in the pool and he needs to go with us...lol

This is free, so we have to take advantage of what the apartment has to offer. I am not fan of swimming  pool and also I don't know how to swim and not interested to learn but Casey enjoyed it and she was trying to learn how to swim. She was wishing she was a mermaid  like Ariel,  what a scary wish!

Must we answer every why?
Posted on August 31, 2008

Our daughter, Casey is in the why phase. She has lot of questions. She tires us out asking the same questions over and over. Her favorite phrase is "why". Do we really need to answer to her "every" why questions? Or should she deserves to get a mischief answer from us. I admit I have done it at times. Sometimes we answered her by simply saying "because".

If we write the every why questions, I can guarantee it will be a book. I wonder why kids are like that. They have so many questions in there mind. I know Casey wants to find out and understand things but sometimes she has the questions that are impossible to explain or too young for her to comprehend. So far, she hasn't ask yet why the sky is blue.

Just like yesterday morning, Chris and Casey were watching Ariel movie. Casey has so many questions. I don't want to elaborate every why but we'll give a few examples. I'm sure some parents out there know what I am talking about here, they'll probably been into this situation.

Examples: What Eric's doing? he escaped on the ship. Why he escaped on the ship

what's they're doing, daddy? Dancing. Why they're dancing?

Why they say meow. Because they spin around
Why they spin around, why the cats have to hang on

why he take off the hat? because he was hot

This is about the ballerina movie...

why she can't go in? she don't have the ticket.
why she don't have the ticket. Casey, you know the story already. Just watch!

If we answer her why questions, she asked why about our answer. So it is a nonstop whys! I guess this is part of her growing up. Perhaps, she is learning this way!
